Meconium histocytosis of the fetal membranes, usually as part of placenta processing.

Gross processing

Grossly, the amniotic side of the fetal membranes and placental disk is inspected for any greenish discoloration, which indicates the presence of mecinoum.[1]

Gross pathology of meconium-stained placentas.

Microscopy

At least if the presence of meconium is suspected from clinical history and/or the gross exam, look for the following histopathologic signs of it:[2]

Reporting

It does not need to be reported if not readily seen. Example addition to a placenta report:

Meconium histiocytosis.
