Gross processing
For stoma and donuts:
- Count the number of pieces and measure at least the maximum dimension of each.
- Note any gross lesions.
- Submit sections that include both mucosa and skin if detected.
Example report:
| (A. Labeled -colostomy site donuts. The specimen is received in formalin and consists of) 3 {{donut-shaped}} fragments of tissue partly covered by mucosa, measuring from 1.5 up to 6.5 cm in maximum dimension. The mucosa displays no gross lesions. (The mucocutaneous junction is intact. Representative sections are submitted for microscopic examination in 3 cassettes.) |
Microscopic evaluation
Exclude any incidental malignancy.
Example report:
(Colorectal donut, excision:)
